Marathon of Respect and Equality (MORE)

May 15, 2012 - NEWS

The third annual Marathon of Respect and Equality (MORE) took place on Thursday, May 3 in Pictou County.  The theme this year was “Many Stories, Many Voices, One People.”  Rallies were held in the five towns and the Pictou Landing First Nations and all schools in the Celtic Family were eager and pleased to partner with the Municipal leaders, businesses and communities to continue the important work started by Henderson Paris twenty three years ago.  Each school in  Pictou County participated by attending and/or speaking or singing at one of the rallies, running all or part of the marathon, and/or holding a walk in their community. This amounted to over three hundred students actually running (not including school staff) and over thirty three hundred students publicly stating how they have made a commitment to eliminate discrimination and racism from our schools and communities.

May 9, 2012 - NEWS

Dawn Oman, a Métis artist who was born in Yellowknife, worked with students at Elmsdale District to create a school-wide art project.  With Ms. Oman’s assistance, and using the style and brilliant colours characteristic of her art, students transformed their doors into distinctly Canadian masterpieces.

Each class was assigned a province or territory and students drew symbols that were representative of each region. Ms. Oman selected from these drawings and interpreted them to create the final design for each door. Students and teachers painted alongside Ms. Oman as well as a team of parent volunteers.
